Julia Holmes, beautiful, wealthy, intelligent and spoiled, sees the war that divided her country as an opportunity for attending more parties and adding to her string of admirers. Her more realistic sister, Louisa, worries about her beau, Major Adam Sorenson, who will fight in the First Battle of Bull Run in July 1861. Along with other overconfident Washingtonians, Julia rides off to picnic in Centerville, Virginia, near Manassas where Adam Sorenson and thousands of others will soon fight and die. When Julia is caught up in the savage battle, she learns that her romantic ideas of war were false but that she can show courage in the face of danger.
