For hundreds of years, legends, events, traditions, stories, romantic tales, heroic actions in battles and beliefs have been passed down many generations through poems adapted for singing.

The tradition of handing down legends, beliefs, and stories accelerated in many countries during tragic and momentous periods of upheaval and turmoil. This was especially true during the North-South conflict of 1861-1865 in the War Between the States.

This work consists of an extensively researched compilation of scores of ballads that reflect the peoples, feelings, wartime patriotism, fears, sorrow, suffering, sentimentalism and weariness of war during the most tumultuous period in American history.
