The Young Heroes of History series continues with Nowhere to Turn. Thomas Adams lived on a farm in Pennsylvania with his aunt, uncle, and cousins. Farm life was boring with only chores and more chores to do. When the war came, Thomas thought this would be his chance to get away from the farm. The glory and thrill of going off to fight was exciting to a young farm hand.
After joining his regiment, Thomas was able to save a beautiful dog from a rushing carriage. Thinking he had finally found the perfect pet, Thomas was very happy. His regiment even made the dog their mascot. Thomas started to feel that he had finally found a home. He never imagined that life could turn worse than the days before he joined the army.
When General Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia invaded the North, Thomas was called upon to forget his fears and help save the country. In a small town called Sharpsburg, which bordered Antietam Creek, a battle would be fought that would determine the outcome of the war. Would Thomas fight? Would he run? Would he even survive?
