Stonewall Jackson is buried in Lexington, Virginia. But where is the last resting place of Joseph Johnston or Robert E. Lee? Those generals who survived the war had later careers and were finally buried perhaps back in their hometown, perhaps in some distant town, or even in another country. Civil War enthusiasts and descendants will now be able to not only read about their favorite generals’ grave sites, but even visit them.

Generals at Rest is the first guide to bring pictures of the graves and textual information about each general's burial site. Representing 26 years of research and travel, Owen and Owen have located and described the last resting place of the Confederacy's military leadership. These sites are in 21 states, the District of Columbia, and two foreign countries.

With the terrible physical and economic destruction of the war and its aftermath, many of these burial plots were neglected. Sometimes, the graves had to be relocated. Here is their definitive story.
